  Selecting Alternate Airports

While on an IFR flight plan, if VFR conditions are not forecast at your intended destination airport, an alternate airport must be chosen and included in your flight plan. But not just any airport will do. It must have an approach that you are equipped to fly and that approach must meet specific weather minimums to be selected. If no approach at the airport you would like to use as an alternate passes the weather minimums test you will be required to find another one. The rules for selection of alternates aren't difficult, but you do have to know them.
